Heads upDesignated clothing-optional bathing is common near Lagos (Meia Praia (western end), Praia de Pinheiros (between Ponta da Piedade and Praia do Camilo), Praia do Barranco (Lagos - Vila do Bispo, Raposeira)).
The verdict

Lagos gives you a real town and a real beach in one trip. Inside the 16th-century walls it's small and very walkable, with cobbled lanes, squares and a wall of cafés and restaurants you'll never run short of, and the coastline behind it is genuinely spectacular - golden cliffs, sea stacks and the coves at Ponta da Piedade. The trade is calm: this is a busy, animated place, so a hushed base it isn't. Two practical notes. The Atlantic stays cool even in summer, so it's a paddle-and-build beach more than a long swim. And several beaches near town allow clothing-optional bathing, so if that matters with younger kids, point the buggy at Meia Praia's eastern end or Porto de Mós, both Blue Flag and family-clear.

How it scores

Family-fit is the weighted blend of six signals, tuned to a babies & toddlers trip, each derived from open data: maps, climate, Blue Flag, places. Open any signal to see why it scored as it did.

The beachTop-tier

The headline is the coast: nearly 4km of golden sand at Meia Praia plus the cliff-backed coves, sea stacks and grottoes of Ponta da Piedade, all sand-floored beaches.

BeautyStunning

Genuinely good-looking: golden sandstone cliffs, turquoise coves and the sea stacks and grottoes at Ponta da Piedade, with Dona Ana regularly named among the best beaches anywhere. The coast does the heavy lifting, and it photographs every bit as well as it sounds.

WeatherWarm

Warm and reliable from late spring to early autumn, peaking around September; winters are mild for Europe but cooler, and there's little shade at midday in high summer.

Getting thereManageable

Faro sits about 60 minutes away by road, and roughly 20 UK airports fly in across the year on a single-terminal airport that's simple to clear with kids in tow.

Walking aroundSome effort

Lagos town is small and very walkable, a labyrinth of narrow streets and squares where you genuinely don't need a car.

Amenities nearbyEverything there

Dining and shops are dense and varied, from café tables spilling into the squares to a waterfront promenade of restaurants, tours and artisan stalls.

Things to doA handfulfor little ones

Plenty to fill days: boat trips to the Ponta da Piedade caves, sandcastle beaches, and a pushchair-friendly zoo that suits younger children.

HealthcareQuick to reach

Medical access is strong, with care close at hand rather than a long drive away if a holiday bug strikes.

The vibe

These are taste, so they sit outside the score. Read them against what your family wants.

LivelyQuietLively

This is a busy, animated town with real nightlife, so it leans lively rather than quiet and restful.

PlainCharmingCharming

One of the Algarve's most characterful towns, mixing 16th-century walls, whitewashed lanes, lively squares and a spectacular coastline.

Most arrivals

For most arrivals

Pre-book an airport transfer, or hire a car for the freedom to explore the wider coast and the quieter beaches beyond the resort.

How these were picked: at onboarding we verify the practical routes from the arrival airport and list the best option of each kind - public transport where it genuinely works well, pre-bookable transfer firms with strong ratings (we survey every airport's transfer firms on Google Places), and the hotel shuttle where that's the local pattern. Nobody pays to appear here.
