“Is the sea warm enough for the kids?” decides more beach holidays than any brochure admits. Here’s the June water, measured by satellite, for every destination we score.

Open-water satellite readings. Sheltered shallows where children actually paddle run warmer in summer, so treat these as the cautious end.

The result most people don’t expect

The warmest June water in our catalogue is Lido di Jesolo’s 23.5°C, on the northern Adriatic. The Adriatic there is a shallow basin, around 20 to 25 metres deep, and shallow water changes temperature fast: baltic in February, then racing up through late spring at a pace the deep Atlantic can’t match. By June it has overtaken every Atlantic beach we score.

The same physics works against the Canaries in early summer. The water around Fuerteventura is deep Atlantic, stirred by the cool Canary Current: superb air temperatures, sea that takes until late summer to catch up. And the Algarve sits in between, with the quirk that its sea barely changes between June and August; what you get in half term is roughly what you get in the holidays.

What we’d do with this

For a toddler who’ll spend hours at the water’s edge, a couple of degrees is the difference between lingering and a blue-lipped retreat. If a warm June sea is the brief, the Adriatic is the data’s answer. If you’re going in August anyway, the gap narrows and the rest of the scorecard should drive the choice.

Sea temperature is one signal inside the Weather sub-score; the month picker on every destination page re-rates the whole card for the month you’re actually travelling. How the scoring works →
